Coffee: The Moldy Crop

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, but did you know that it can be a major source of mold?

Coffee beans are grown in tropical climates, where they are exposed to high levels of humidity and moisture. This creates the perfect environment for mold to grow.

In fact, a study by the University of California, Davis found that 90% of coffee beans contain mold. The most common type of mold found on coffee beans is Aspergillus, which can produce aflatoxins, a type of toxin that has been linked to cancer.

Other types of mold that can be found on coffee beans include Penicillium, Fusarium, and Rhizopus. These molds can produce a variety of toxins, including ochratoxin A, which has been linked to kidney damage and liver cancer.

A study by the Environmental Working Group found that coffee beans can contain high levels of pesticides, including glyphosate, chlorpyrifos, and malathion. These pesticides have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cancer, reproductive problems, and developmental disorders.

So, what can you do to protect yourself from the harmful effects of mold and pesticides in coffee?

  • First, choose organic coffee. Organic coffee is grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides, so it is less likely to be contaminated with these chemicals.
  • Second, look for coffee that has been roasted dark. Dark roast coffee has been roasted at a higher temperature, which destroys more of the mold and toxins that may be present.
  • Third, avoid coffee that has been flavored or sweetened. Flavored and sweetened coffees often contain added sugar, which can contribute to weight gain and other health problems.
  • Finally, drink coffee in moderation. Coffee is a good source of antioxidants, but it can also be high in caffeine. Drinking too much coffee can lead to anxiety, insomnia, and other health problems.

The Benefits of Hugging & Why We Need Them As Humans

I wanted to talk to you about something I’ve been thinking about a lot, and that’s closeness. 

We humans are used to living together in large numbers. We’re like herd animals. We feel best when we’re together and offer support to one another. 

Our bodies, minds, and hearts need that closeness.

During and even before Covid, we’ve been very touch deprived. We’re in a technology age and we’re not as close as we used to be. We don’t hug, touch, or connect physically as often or with as many people as we used to. This impacts our health, stress levels, blood pressure, our heart rate, and so much more. 

All of these things are improved when we have a hug. A hug that lasts over 20 seconds can literally decrease your blood pressure and heart rate in that moment, and consistently through the day.  There is even some research that shows hugging daily improves our immunity and our resilience in the face of infectious illnesses.  

One thing I’ve noticed in particular is how fearful people are now. We’re not only touch deprived, but we’re afraid to touch. All of the things that once comforted us we’re now afraid of. We shouldn’t be afraid of one another. It is impacting our health. 

We deserve to be happy and comforted again. 

I suggest people start comforting and hugging one another again. I suggest we focus on not being afraid of one another. 

It’s really important that we remain human. It’s important that we remember who we are.

Spring Is In The Air…Or Is It Your Allergies?

Spring is in the air!

It’s a time of year we all wait for. Our days are longer and it’s warmer outside. But for some of us it can be misery. Seasonal allergies are no joke. Many people are on multiple medications because of it and in some cases some people even have to leave their homes.

If this is you, then listen up. I’m going to give you some tips that will improve your health and decrease your symptoms in allergy season. 

Over 60% of our immune system is located in our GI tract. If our gut is not healthy then there’s an irritation in our immune system. That irritation can then come out as many unwanted things. 

The allergy medications are not getting to the root cause of the problem.  These medications may help in the moment but the side effects create other problems and they do not fix the issue long term.  

Here’s some tips that can help:

  • Change your diet/get rid of those inflammatory foods
  • Increase your nutrient dense whole foods
  • Eliminate those extra sugars from your diet
  • Increase the nutrients that are needed by your intestinal tract
  • Manage your stress
  • Good healthy sleep hygiene

If these things aren’t working then that probably means we didn’t get to the root cause. There’s something else going on that needs to be addressed.

Program Testimonial: Success with Gut Dysbiosis and Hashimoto’s

Amy’s one of my clients who started with me last Summer. We’ve worked together through the 16 week program where she experienced many benefits. 

Amy found out a while back (in 2012) that she had Hashimoto’s. She then sought help from a functional medicine practitioner. That really started her on her journey to healing. She knew she needed help but didn’t know where to start. 

Amy had extreme bloating and other gastrointestinal symptoms before joining my program. That was one of her biggest issues she was hoping to address. Foods You Should Eliminate with Autoimmune Protocol

I wanted to talk to you a little about some of the foods we eliminate with autoimmune protocol reset. 

But first we have to talk about autoimmunity and what it is.

Autoimmunity is when our immune system actually begins to attack our own tissue. We all know that our immune system is there to protect us from outside invaders, whether that’s a virus, bacteria, mold, or something else. 75% of our immune system is in our gastrointestinal system. We may create inflammation  due to  things we eat, breathe in, rub into our skin, etc. Oftentimes the issue begins in the gut, causing a leaky gut. 

If we can decrease the inflammatory foods we consume and allow time for our gut to heal and improve its function, then we are also impacting our immune system. Anytime our gut is functioning better our immune system is functioning better. As you get healthier you realize how sick you really were. 

What we’re doing with the autoimmune protocol is we’re reducing the inflammatory (or potentially inflammatory) foods in our diet for a short period of time. The diets are not meant to be forever, but rather gives the gastrointestinal system time to heal. 

After we’ve completely healed the gut we can begin to add one back in at a time. When we heal the gut it can then begin to handle some of these foods. 

We’re all human and we make little mistakes with our diet, body, and wellness. The things that we do 80-85% of the time are going to be the things that really change our lives. The better we can do everyday the better we’re going to feel.

Evolving As Humans With The Right Nutrition And Lifestyle

Have you ever thought about the similarities between how the human body and a computer works?

When a computer is asked to do something it’s written in code. That code allows the computer to know how to react to the environment that it’s in, what it should be doing, and what tasks to complete. 

Our human body is very similar to this. Our code comes in in the form of the food that we eat and the environment that we’re in, our light sources and the exposure to light. These are sources of information which together tell our bodies what they need to do next. 

I want to specifically talk about nutrition and food as code. As we evolved as humans, we evolved outside. How we evolved is how we became our best selves. The food, environment, light, and all of our surroundings told our bodies where they were. 

If you didn’t have grocery stores, delivery services, and everything else that we have nowadays, what would we be eating? We wouldn’t be eating bananas where I live in Michigan, that’s for sure. 

So with our environment, it can confuse our bodies depending on what we’re eating if we are not eating food that matches our environment.  When we confuse our body’s computer coded input (food and light) we create a mismatch of information for our mitochondria to try to resolve.  This often creates mitochondrial dysfunction.

When our mitochondria are working well then we have more cellular energy and vitality. When they’re burdened and not working well, that’s when you have disease. Because of this, it’s very important to be mindful of what you’re eating, and during what times of the day and year. We’re using our code and the way we evolved to adjust through our lifestyle. The same things goes for when we sleep and how much light we’re taking in. 

We all know that when we give our body’s the right things, we’re healthier, and when we don’t we’re less healthy. But when we’re sick we don’t think so much about how we can lessen our sickness. How can you improve the symptoms that you have when you’re sick? 

When we make bad choices we progress closer and closer to illness. So shouldn’t it be the same for when we are making good choices?  Shouldn’t this help us progress closer to being healthy? YES, ABSOLUTELY! 

It makes sense, and it works. It’s part of the process I use with functional medicine.

Sleeping Tips That Will Have You Feeling Refreshed

I wanted to give you a few tips on recovery and sleep.

Sleep is so important to our overall health. It’s the time when our bodies adjust, rebalance, clear out toxins, recover muscle damage, and so much more. 

Especially in today’s day and age, our motors are always revving. Because of this it’s that much more important that we’re able to cool the brain down at night time and remove the toxins that were created. When we do that we improve the brain function, not only for the next day, but for the rest of your life. When we don’t get enough quality sleep we develop plaques in our brain. Those plaques contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. Sleep is incredibly important, not only for our comfort and recovery, but our brain health. 

Sleep is free. You just have to choose to do it, and in the right way. 

What can you do to improve sleep?

Here’s 4 simple tips:

  1. Sleep hygiene 
  2. Remove electronics from your bedroom
  3. Blue blocking glasses 
  4. Do not eat within 2-3 hours before bedtime 

With the implementation of these 4 simple tips, you can improve your sleep quality immensely.
